ABSTRACT

While most athletes can make a successful return back to participation, at times injury forces an involuntary transition out of sport. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the transition out of sport due to injury. The chapter will focus on two interconnected injury and rehabilitation outcome perspectives – injuries that result in a career termination and injuries that result in both a career termination and an acquired disability. First, the chapter summarizes personal and sociocultural factors that have been found to influence the transition process due to sport injury, followed by a summary of existing literature on adaptation to acquired disability associated with sport injury. The chapter will also outline the role of sport psychology, sports medicine, and sports professionals in transition out of sport due to injury.
