ABSTRACT

The population of people with intellectual disabilities is changing with overall increase over the years. They are growing into older age due to several factors. They have significant healthcare needs compared to the general population; therefore, they are frequent users of acute healthcare services. People with intellectual disabilities and their carers experience difficulties when accessing or using acute healthcare services, hence they will require additional support. The acute liaison nurse role has been established in response to the identified difficulties to support to improve their health outcomes. This chapter will explore the current role of the acute liaison nurse for people with intellectual disabilities in achieving person-centered outcomes in acute healthcare services. It will reflect on some of the key developments, guidelines and recommendations that have influenced the acute liaison nursing role.
