ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to delineate good practices for institutions of higher education and faculty when it comes to providing meaningful and quality interactions between postdoctoral scholars (postdocs) and members of the faculty, with a focus on mentoring. The chapter provides an overview of the current status of the postdoctoral scholar experience and highlights the challenges of the experience through a brief examination of findings from interviews with postdocs. In addition, the chapter includes an overview of professional development and training for postdocs, an emphasis on the importance of mentoring, and case examples of mentoring resources and programs designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between postdocs and faculty.
