ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways to empower young gifted children by providing enriching and extending learning experiences in their formal schooling. Enrichment and extension for young gifted children are often terms that are used interchangeably to refer to both curriculum adjustments and programmes that extend a young child’s learning. In this chapter, case studies of enrichment and extension programmes are provided, along with examples of differentiation practices in the early years. By supporting gifted children in the early years educators can provide them with opportunities, skills, and dispositions to go on to become talented individuals in a particular field of human endeavour. In the early years, educators play an essential role in learning about, understanding and advocating for giftedness and talent development. By understanding the foundations of gifted programming early years educators can provide a supportive environment that creates the conditions to maximise opportunities for talent development.
