ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the concept of numeracy, focusing on what this looks like for young learners. The authors review current perspectives on numeracy within a rapidly changing technological society and highlight young children’s capacity for mathematical thinking. They provide examples of how early years learners engage with a range of mathematical concepts and principles and how educators can extend and support children’s learning. Opportunities for mathematics are exemplified through play experiences, using games, picture books, and technological resources, with a reminder of the importance of effective communication and the critical role of educators in facilitating opportunities for children to explore, represent, and communicate about mathematics.
