ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the meaning of arts-based learning for education. It recognises arts-based learning as different to developing skills and qualities in a particular art form such as dance, drama, music. The chapter argues that arts-based learning focuses on artistry and artfulness in the learning process and does not necessarily require a specific arts discipline, or artist. The artistic process applied to educational activities calls for experiences that are open-ended, collaborative, unpredictable and gradual. This chapter recognises the tensions that can occur when the arts are used as a pedagogic tool for learning, including difficulties with definitions and with educator competencies. With careful organisation, an arts-based learning approach is promoted here as valuable to education at all levels because of its ability to create unique atmospheres of artfulness within the learning process.
