ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to prompt education studies students to reflect on their beliefs about, and experience of, education in order to develop their personal philosophy of education. It explores some of the key developments in the philosophy of education, such as medieval scholasticism and critical theory. In order to make these philosophies of education accessible to newcomers to the history and philosophy of education, they are framed as diverse responses to the question, ‘What is a ‘good’ education?’ Next, readers are introduced to the concept of Digital Storytelling, and given guidance on how to create their own digital stories about their education. The rationale for Digital Storytelling is explained, and readers are encouraged to link reflections on their own experience of education (their personal story) with the exploration of the various philosophies of education offered in this chapter. In so doing, the reader’s lived experience is brought into dialogue with the history and philosophy of education, thereby making this information ‘real’ for them.
