ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to expand on teaching considerations to establish class formation. First a review of instruction using multiple-element teaching is presented and how including those types of items during instruction may lead to more effective learning and acquisition of skills. Multiple-element items may be classified as either compound (i.e., elements cannot be separated from one another) or complex (i.e., individual elements may be sufficient to produce a desired response on their own) stimuli. Second a brief review of errorless instruction, including a comparison with other types of teaching methods (i.e., trial-and-error and error is presented), and how limiting errors may lead to better instructional outcomes and the establishment of derived relations.
