ABSTRACT

Brisbane 2032 starts a new era in Olympics with many unique and unusual elements we can expect to see in future Olympics. It is the first host selected using the new bidding process which awarded the Games to this unrivalled and comparatively unknown, mid-size city eleven years before the event. Despite the conventional but misleading city name for the Games it will truly be a regional event – a first in Olympics history. It is also the first that is contractually obligated to be climate positive. This chapter introduces the most recently announced Olympics host and explores how the city is using the Games as a catalyst to realize and accelerate long-term goals ranging from active and public transport projects and urban renewal and transformation through Games Villages and venues to achieving sustainability and carbon emission targets. The success of Brisbane 2032 may mark a turning point in the history of Olympics and enable many mid-size cities and their regions to dream the Olympic dream.
