ABSTRACT

Through a content analysis of episodes from two different economic podcasts, this chapter examines how “Brown Ambition”, a microeconomic podcast hosted by two Black women, and “Freakonomics Radio,” a macroeconomic podcast hosted by a white man, discuss debt, taxes, retirement, gender pay gap, and wealth. Examining economic topics relevant to all listeners, this chapter shows how gender and race can impact the framing of issues, the context of discussions, and the connection to audience relevance. These hosts, acting as gatekeepers of business and economic knowledge, curate, interpret, and present content to their audiences based on their lived experiences, presumed timeliness, and expectations of what listeners want to hear. Exploring these decisions through the lens of race and gender offers interesting insights into the often-claimed certainty of “death and taxes.”
