ABSTRACT

Transitioning out of the trenches, some business journalists are finding new careers through teaching in higher education. This chapter explores issues and topics that former business journalists face when beginning their teaching journey in colleges and universities. It also examines the challenge such journalists have in cracking reluctance among students to study business journalism, which involves encouraging them to take courses in a field few students know about. And it discusses how professional moves to the academy provide journalists opportunities to do a different sort of journalistic work, such as writing academic articles and books, than they were accustomed to doing. Journalists also find academic work to be satisfying, another aspect that this chapter addresses. Ideas on how to promote student learning of business journalism also are discussed.
