ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how some business news media, including The Wall Street Journal, Insider, and Forbes, covered the insurrection in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021. How the media may portray such events and the issues they raise may depend on the source of the media. Mainstream mass media sometimes neglect controversial issues, while alternative news outlets may report on them as part of their specialized coverage. Understanding business decisions that media make within their strategies for investigating and sharing information sheds light on what gets covered especially when politics are involved. Consequently, we examine mainstream media to discuss the mainstream/alternative spectrum by contextualizing the events of January 6. Through one perniciously provocative moment in American history, we describe the framing of the insurrection by leading business journalism news outlets that have been initially evaluated for bias. Also, we explore how these business news platforms differ from some general news platforms.
