ABSTRACT

Positive Psychology (PP) has been adopted by governments and major organisations across many fields of politics, business, leadership, media, health, education, and more recently sport. This chapter introduces ideas from PP to support golfers well-being, development, and longevity within the game. It introduces strategies to enhance well-being and happiness through positive psychological interventions (PPIs) and focuses on one area – discovering and using character strengths (CS). Reflecting on the potential benefits of positive emotions and happiness for golfers, it's helpful to understand how the golfer and/or coach presently seek to support positive emotions and happiness in their training, match play, and other golf experiences. Research shows that it is more effective to seek increased positive emotions and experiences through small everyday activities rather than exclusively attaching happiness to the outcomes of larger infrequent events. Evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of many types of PPIs and one area is associated with discovering and using CS.
