ABSTRACT

In 2013, a documentary titled ‘The Short Game’ was released. It focused on eight children, who were seven and eight years of age, and were participating in the 2012 United States Kids Golf World Championship. Throughout their participation in sport, numerous people interact with children and play a role in influencing their development and experiences. In most cases, parents are seeking to be involved in a responsive and beneficial manner to support their children's sporting development. The extensive literature on parental involvement in sport and its associated outcomes for young people, coaches, and parents alike provides a wealth of applied knowledge for optimising parental roles across a golfer's developmental journey. Given parents’ desire to support their children in the best possible ways, as well as a recognition that parenting children in sport can be associated with a range of challenges, parents, coaches, and psychology practitioners have all acknowledged the benefit of providing parents with support and guidance.
