ABSTRACT

Much research, both general and sport-specific, has been undertaken to better understand the different types and levels of transitions that athletes may face. In this chapter, the different transitions typically made throughout a golfing career will be outlined, using the holistic athletic career model as a framework to articulate the concurring demands. While the age of initiation into playing sport can vary, the golf development pathway tends to start at an early age. There are several short- and long-term benefits to golfers continuing their learning into university studies alongside their golf career. Knowledge of transition demands and processes is a key factor in transition success. Reflecting on performances and developments is beneficial for athletes throughout their careers. To summarise, the chapter describes the various transitions that golfers may experience during their careers, using the holistic athletic career model to underpin the discussion.
