ABSTRACT

This chapter examines two representative Chinese films about environmental disaster: The Ozone Layer Vanishes (1990) and The Wandering Earth (2019). It uses the term “ecoagency” to describe the plot function of the young protagonists, who enable the restoration of their damaged home. The films’ implicit assurances about young people’s ability to save the planet have less to do with realistic solutions to global environmental problems than with forming citizens whose confidence in their heroic capacity to effect change fosters a commitment to go to extreme lengths to protect the homeland together.
