ABSTRACT
This chapter makes the argument that the inherent value of DSI lies in its ability to be freely combined and shared and so any solution addressing benefit sharing from DSI should safeguard this open access. The chapter concludes that de-coupled benefit sharing mechanisms for DSI are the most compatible with open access practices and, in general, multilateral mechanisms are the most suited for benefit sharing if fully de-coupled mechanisms become politically unrealistic.
