ABSTRACT

Most people are familiar with the negative consequences of poorly designed technology: Websites with an overly complicated menu structure, smartwatches with screens that are too small to use properly, or extremely unattractive apps. These kinds of issues might cause users to stop using the technology or use it in the wrong way. In eHealth, poorly designed technology can have a negative impact on effectiveness, because the users do not optimally benefit from the content of the technology. Consequently, it is important that a design fits the needs and preferences of the users as closely as possible. Attention should be paid to this throughout the entire development process, as described in Chapter 7 on holistic eHealth development. In this chapter, specific attention is paid to how design good eHealth technologies, using methods from human-centred design.
