ABSTRACT

The first chapter introduced eHealth and pointed out its added value for our health, well-being, and the healthcare system. To understand and develop persuasive eHealth interventions, which aim to change behaviour or attitudes, it is essential to get a grasp of the relationship between technology and psychology. Consequently, the main goal of this second chapter is to provide an understanding of the role of psychology in health and illness. In the domain of eHealth, technology and behavioural sciences cannot be viewed separate from each other. In order to grasp this interrelationship, the basics of psychology, health, behaviour, and their relationship should be made clear. There also are links between eHealth technology specific paradigms within psychology such as health and positive psychology. There are many theories that were initially developed for psychology that are important for eHealth interventions as well, such as behaviour change theories. Furthermore, technology offers new and innovative opportunities to enable behaviour change.
