ABSTRACT

Previous chapters pointed out that eHealth technologies have the potential to address many health-related issues including public, somatic, and mental health. This chapter focuses on the use of eHealth technology to support or improve mental health, or eMental health, which includes both psychological well-being and mental health disorders. Originating as computer and web-based interventions mostly for depression and anxiety, their scope has expanded rapidly in recent years to include more target conditions, diverse populations, and more advanced technology including wearables and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). Evidence supports that eMental health interventions can effectively address a range of mental disorders and a growing body of literature suggests that they can be successfully implemented and integrated into real-world clinical settings. Increased implementation will nevertheless require diligent adherence to implementation frameworks (see Chapter 13) to ensure alignment of interventions, invested parties, and contextual attributes.
