ABSTRACT

This chapter relates to the British Psychological Society’s area of Learning, Training and Development, and focuses in detail on coaching psychology, now one of the most popular approaches to professional development in organisations. This chapter offers an introduction to the academic field of coaching psychology, offering some definitions and an overview of the current state of research. The chapter then turns to the practical application, describing one of the most popular models for structuring a coaching conversation, the GROW model, and highlighting some core coaching skills. The chapter will end with a few words about working as a coach – what types of coaching roles are commonly available and what factors an aspiring coach might need to think about if they are considering taking coaching further.
