ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the British Psychological Society’s area of Learning, Training and Development that covers career development, occupational choice and workplace learning and development. Underpinning this aspect of organisational psychology is a desire for workers to develop sustainable careers, those which allow individuals to be happy, healthy and productive at work. The chapter is divided into three parts. It focuses first on the nature of contemporary career paths and introduces the boundaryless career model. In the second section, attention turns to occupational choice, and the evidence showing how people make career decisions is introduced. In the final section of the chapter, the focus turns to learning and development in organisations, explaining some of the challenges involved in running effective training courses, and suggestions to help design and deliver successful learning and development in organisations are offered.
