ABSTRACT

This chapter relates to the British Psychological Society’s area of Psychological Assessment and focuses on the field of psychometrics and how tests are applied in the workplace. Psychometrics is a multi-billion-pound industry and tests are used in every part of the lifecycle of an employee, including selection, assessment, onboarding, training and development and succession planning. Psychometrics (when used responsibly) can help to improve the accuracy of decisions and to reduce unconscious bias. This chapter offers a practical viewpoint on how different types of assessments are constructed and used in the workplace. The chapter then ends by discussing the role of technology in psychometrics, including utilising ‘big’ data and innovative data collection methodologies.
