ABSTRACT

Delivering a mega-sporting event (MSE) draws global attention to workers’ rights and human rights issues in host countries and cities, providing an opportunity to advance responsible business practices and strengthen accountability. This chapter makes the case that, provided an enabling environment is in place, sectoral collaboration against the backdrop of an MSE can help promote improved labour practices for priority sectors and their commercial partners. With a focus on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we discuss collective action initiatives with key sectors in Qatar and the challenges in ensuring a long-term shift towards responsible business conduct beyond single sporting events. By exploring both the positive and negative impacts of MSEs for the promotion of labour standards within the hotel sector, this chapter aims to contribute to ongoing and future discussions about the role of multi-stakeholder and sector-specific collaboration in strengthening business policy, practice and accountability.
