ABSTRACT

In the past decade there have been visible failings and a range of allegations of human rights abuses related to the use of private security at mega-sporting events (MSEs). While a number of steps have been taken by international sports federations to address human rights concerns, with the footprint of private security in future MSEs likely to expand, much more needs to be done if the risks associated with the use of private security are to be effectively mitigated. This chapter outlines the roles private security plays at MSEs, the risks associated with using private security service providers and the steps organisers and others procuring private security services can take to mitigate these risks.
