ABSTRACT

Community languages schools form a key language education sector internationally. They are more than complementary and are not simply ethnic community “enclaves”. They have existed for over 300 years in some countries and operate in all countries with minority languages and immigration. Research developments in the ways we view languages and language practices mean that we must re-examine languages education in all contexts within and beyond schooling. Community languages schools can be a “driver” in future research. This chapter discusses the key areas where research is needed.
