ABSTRACT

The second chapter of the book is divided into four subchapters and concerned with the overall topic of futures thinking. In this regard, foresight is considered a cognitive capacity and connections to psychology are repeatedly drawn. The chapter discusses several aspects: First, the relevance of thinking about the future; second, cognitive aspects of thinking about the future; third challenges individuals and organisations face when thinking about the future; and fourth, how those challenges can be overcome through trainings. The chapter thereby highlights how individual and organisational futures thinking are interwoven with each other and how the application of foresight methods (e.g., scenario planning) can enable perceiving the environment and prospecting the future.
