ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of how sport for development (SFD) has become a significant player in global efforts towards achieving wider development goals. It then portrays the key thematic areas of SFD and discusses contemporary examples of programs and projects, drawing on international literature and current research from around the globe. With a focus on sport and peacebuilding, this chapter also provides case studies of SFD that are based on fieldwork conducted in Fiji and the fiercely contested Israel/Palestine region. Finally, this chapter concludes with critical lessons learnt and poses questions about the opportunities and challenges of employing sport as a development tool.
