ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews key considerations for the management and delivery of sport across all levels (i.e., recreation, competition, high performance). It discusses how environmental pressures, such as shifts in policy priorities, an evolving landscape of sport participation, and resource constraints, may require managerial adaptations that are innovative and that challenge taken-for-granted ways of administering sport. A focus is placed on the evolving nature of participation needs and preferences across different participant groups. A range of capacity considerations and challenges in sport development are explored, as are strategic considerations for organisational capacity-building efforts in community sport. This chapter concludes by examining the ways in which sport managers might engage in capacity building and strategic planning activities to effectively respond to environmental challenges.
