ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book deals with international politics, particularly the geopolitical role Washington plays in the Mexico-Guatemala transborder region. It focuses on institutional policy regarding the Mexico-Guatemala relationship. The book then offers an overview of the four crises that Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras have undergone. It also deals with the strong influence of the United States in the Mexico-Guatemala border region. The book offers a roadmap and diagnosis of the treaties and agreements entered by both countries, under the authorship of Nuty Cardenas Alaminos, Elizabeth Magallon Ibarra and Mariana Jimenez Canet from CIDE. It then analyzes the evolution of the Mexico-Guatemala Binational Commission, its performance, its scope, and its limitations. The book also presents an unprecedented list of statements about national integrity within the context of a new geopolitics with the arrival of Donald Trump to power as President of the United States.
