ABSTRACT

In Argentina, reservists come from four different sources: former soldiers who are now retired (or have requested discharge), graduates of military high schools, civilians who have completed military service and, in the case of the Army, civilians who have completed the Officers Training Course (OTC). This chapter is concerned with Argentinian reservists coming from OTCs, which incorporate university graduates or people with specific training to provide support to the Army. Its main objective is to analyze the motivations and expectations of these reservists to join the reserve of the Argentinian Army. Why have citizens integrated into civilian life and with a more or less consolidated professional development decided to join the Army? I suggest that when a country like Argentina has not been involved in a military conflict since 1983, looking at the reserve is a way to analyze some of the changes that have occurred in the armed forces and their actual state.
