ABSTRACT

This chapter probes the challenges faced by African universities on the management of research and related issues vis-à-vis the rampant meagre conditions in terms of funding, policy, prioritization, collaborations and partnerships. Makerere University and Nairobi University in East Africa do constitute the case study. Developed through the literature review which is ultimately analyzed qualitatively, the chapter ciphers major challenges to include lack of funding and high dependence from the external environment, which, among others, call for the imperative to decolonizing higher education research in the entire Africa. The chapter ultimately recommends concerted efforts towards the funding of research and incentivization of researchers in view of a culture of high-quality research input in the East African region and in the entire continent.
