ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 deals with the dynamics of motivation, and the impact of motivation on individual performance. Here, Biyun Hu and Liang Meng start by discussing employee needs) and then discuss why it is important that managers understand what motivates individual employees if they are to draw optimal levels of performance from them. They then go on to briefly discuss various needs-based theories of motivation (e.g., Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory, etc.), process-based theories of motivation (e.g., equity theory, expectancy theory, etc.), and goal-based theories.
