ABSTRACT

This case discusses people management issues of academic staff at the law department of the University of Zenon, a public higher education institution located in Cyprus. It outlines the promotion and career process as well as the context in which such process takes place, including the organizational, institutional, and cultural factors involved. The example provided in the case is about a female academic and the challenges she faced in her career within a masculine, high-power distance culture with limited adoption of requisite human resource management (HRM) practices and in a country that faces political division. After reading the case, students will be able to understand human resource planning in an academic setting and how key figures in organizations can impact HRM processes. Students will also analyze mentoring and career planning opportunities for academics and connect national culture with HRM in an international setting.
