ABSTRACT

This case describes deficiencies in the management of casual workers within Australian universities, which have been worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, as this pandemic caused a huge reduction in international student enrollments, leading to widespread job losses. The case covers human resource management (HRM) implications and lessons to be learned for the capability of universities to survive and thrive. Further, it illustrates the ramifications for Australia's ranking on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially on decent work and human rights. After reading this case, students will be able to understand links between the university business model and HRM, identify challenges for HRM professionals related to casual employment practices, and understand links between the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and HRM.
