ABSTRACT

Pediatric psychogastroenterology is a growing subspecialty dependent upon highly trained mental health professionals who apply psychological and behavioral principles to treat youth with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases through clinical practice and research. This chapter provides a brief review relating to supervision and future challenges in pediatric psychogastroenterology. It describes the goals of supervision in pediatric psychogastroenterology and details training opportunities for early career trainees as well as licensed mental health professionals seeking further training. The chapter discusses survey results obtained from practicing pediatric GI mental health professionals regarding training and practice experiences and future challenges in pediatric psychogastroenterology and opportunities for advancing the discipline. Supervised training opportunities in pediatric psychogastroenterology are limited and in some countries non-existent. The chapter develops more culturally sensitive evidence-based practices, accreditation requirements, training guidelines, and increased insurance reimbursement for pediatric gastroenterology. As with any new and growing discipline, there are challenges for them to overcome collectively as pediatric psychogastroenterology health professionals and researchers.
