ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the common pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) conditions and symptoms associated with the GI tract (i.e., structural, inflammatory, and disorders of gut–brain interaction). It provides a summary of common treatment methods and associated side effects. The common presenting symptoms of GI conditions that affect youth include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and feeding problems. Various GI conditions can present with similar symptoms, and more than one condition can coexist in a single patient. Hirschsprung disease is a birth defect that is characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in parts of the bowel, leading to impaired gut movement.
