ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the social inequality observed within contemporary societies similar to the Ancien Régime. With the concentration of wealth in the “1%” at an all-time high, billionaires as presidents, the increase of luxury consumption, and the emergence of a culture of distinction and spatial segregation, the chapter proposes that a trend of refeudalization has emerged in the 21st century and this interpretive framework makes such events coherent in socio-economic analysis. While also a global trend, the chapter characterizes the specificities important to Latin America, highlighting colonial heritage and continuities present in the current context.
