ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the logistics of the river transport of wood for shipbuilding from the Navarrese Pyrenees in the late 18th century. It aims to analyse the problems arising from timber transport and the technical developments that emerged to improve and make transport cheaper. It also examines the relationships between the needs of the State-supported forest logging industry and those of the local rural communities. It ends by concluding that this investment brought about a huge development in the forestry industry, leading to significant achievements in the ecological and environmental conservation of the entire wood ecosystem, as well as considerable progress in hydraulic engineering.
