ABSTRACT

Research methods, a required course for many undergraduate and graduate students of public administration, is a great vehicle for discussing social equity. Understanding social equity within research can help students understand the implicit biases which exist in research, how to ask questions that are inclusive (including and beyond demographic questions), and understand the impact of data on supporting and hurting vulnerable communities. This chapter will cover the following: Asking inclusive survey and interview questions; understanding bias and how that may impact research and research methods; how to create a research methods class with a social equity perspective; how to teach students to spot and critique biases in quantitative methods/statistics; and resources for teaching social equity in research methods.
