ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part explores the use of the Integrated Curriculum Model (ICM) as the basis for developing and implementing curriculum for advanced learners in the four core K-12 subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. It explores the principles and practices of the relevant content area, including discussion of current standards, as they relate to the needs of advanced learners. The part then outlines applications of each ICM dimension as well as teaching models that support the implementation of ICM-based units. It also addresses questions related to pace, depth, and breadth in mathematics curriculum for mathematically talented learners, with consideration of acceleration patterns and ways of deepening and expanding the curriculum with more advanced content and a broader base of topics.
