ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part reflects areas of the curriculum outside of the core academic subject areas to address disciplinary and interdisciplinary applications of the Integrated Curriculum Model (ICM) in other domains of learning in which gifted students might excel. It introduces the integration of arts and design with STEM into STEAM and the ways in which related curriculum can respond to gifted learners with a broad range of talents, including strengths in spatial thinking. The part then provides an important example of an interdisciplinary approach to curriculum that embodies the dimensions of the ICM in an integrated way. It also discusses the focus of world language study for the gifted, which requires accelerated opportunities that begin in elementary school and are offered throughout secondary school, culminating in Advanced Placement in the language(s) of choice.
