ABSTRACT

In response to efforts to improve science education in the United States and engage students in authentic practices of science and engineering, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were created and grounded in current research on science and science learning. These standards encourage a three-dimensional approach to science learning with a focus on practices, crosscutting concepts (CC), and disciplinary core ideas (DCI) and a commitment to integrate engineering throughout science education. The updated standards encourage an experiential approach to teaching and learning that aligns well with the Integrated Curriculum Model. This chapter provides examples of differentiated curriculum designed for advanced learners that connects traditional disciplines using engineering design and focuses on relevant student inquiry, creation, and iteration to solve problems. The chapter includes instructional approaches for advanced learners across different age and diversity groups that support culturally responsive teaching and student autonomy.
