ABSTRACT

Curriculum and instruction for teaching world languages to talented language learners must be carefully planned with an articulated scope and sequence to build communicative and cultural understanding and to provide entry points to move new students into the program. This chapter shares aspects of the current standards and differentiated strategies for teaching world languages to K-12 learners. The chapter provides examples of advanced curricular learning activities for world language learners, using the three differentiated elements of the Integrated Curriculum Model. The chapter also integrates ideas for culturally responsive teaching, considerations for responding to special populations of gifted learners, examples of effective approaches to assessment, guidelines for engaging advanced learners, and some of the developmental distinctions and related considerations across age groups in teaching languages.
