ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the specific issues surrounding the appropriate education of advanced learners from low-income backgrounds, the largest underserved gifted population in our schools. Focusing on identification and curriculum strategies, the chapter provides data to support the need for targeted services for this population. The authors discuss the characteristics and needs of this group as distinctive due to limited resource capital in financial and social terms. They also clarify the strengths of the group, noting their conative abilities in motivation, perseverance, and resilience. Differentiated interventions for this group are described with respect to instructional opportunities for collaboration through techniques like project- and problem-based learning, curriculum connections, curricular opportunities for advanced and challenging work, and integrative affective opportunities for meaningful interaction with peers and mentors. The chapter also features curricular illustrations for providing broader services to support and develop talent.
