ABSTRACT

The general principle of non-discrimination explores the fact that all children have all the rights laid out in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Addressing the principle of non-discrimination suggests that play is a necessary precursor of equitable access to opportunities to thrive and grow, regardless of a child’s personal characteristics or socioeconomic circumstances. This chapter explores the role of play and creativity as integral parts of Article 31. It delves into the promotion of diversity through the celebration of the festival of Diwali described by an early year’s practitioner, before discussing the importance of providing all children in schools, the opportunity to play a musical instrument, from the perspective of a peripatetic music teacher. Finally, the role of journaling as a means of self-expression by a parent and her two children illustrates how traditional paper-based techniques can be used to complement open-access digital tools available online through charitable websites.
