ABSTRACT

At the social level, digital media are effective tools for social interaction, operating as a space for conversation and connecting people, but can also act as a window into the lives of others. This chapter discusses the intricate realities of maneuvering Indigenous knowledges/perspectives online that push past boundaries, shift delivery, and question what should/should be shared from an Anicinabe ikwe and Onyota’a:ka perspective. Indigenous knowledge and ways of being are relational and connected not only to one another, but also with the elements of Mother Earth and the universe. A common mainstream perception puts Indigenous cultures at odds with the modern world, although Indigenous peoples have always been adept at fitting new technologies to their cultures. Storytelling is important in many cultures; Indigenous peoples have skillfully developed methodology through storytelling which allow for a deeper awareness of experiences to be elucidated, but are scarcely detailed in scholarly, peer-reviewed outlets.
