ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to affect different segments of human society. In addition to various complexities, it had significant psychological and health impacts on the children. Children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) face extra predicaments to adapt to new challenges throughout the continuing pandemic. Their specific health issues and adaptive skills caused challenges. Behaviour disorders are frequent in children with an ID that produce problems in lifestyle and may reveal mental health issues. Interruption in requisite medical aid, routine disruption, inability to attend schools, reduction in formal and informal support, and local contact with peers and relations resulted in behavioural issues. Behavioural issues may result in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep disturbances, aggression, and self-injury The current chapter explored the parent’s coping mechanism for children with IDs and the daily routine of parents with their children throughout COVID-19. A total of 20 parents of children aged 10–14 were chosen through purposive sampling from the rural area of Ajmer district, Rajasthan. Children with mild and moderate IDs, children studying in special schools, and parents from low socio-economic profiles were included in this study.
