ABSTRACT

With the shift to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, teaching online has become the new norm in higher education. Several attempts were introduced to offer ideas and support for online teaching, especially for academic writing, before the outbreak of the virus, and even within the same year. This chapter sheds light on the challenges teachers encountered during the online teaching of academic writing classes as well as the unexpected benefits that soon emerged. Data were collected from Higher Education teachers in several universities across the UAE to explore their opinions and perspectives on their experiences of teaching academic writing in the online environment during the mandatory shift to online classes. The chapter discusses the quality and availability of online resources and other related aspects like resources used, the provision of feedback, library support, professional development, plagiarism issues, technological issues and peer collaboration. The results and the recommendations at the end of the chapter are intended to contribute to the existing literature about teaching academic writing through the online environment and give implications for policy, practice and future research.
