ABSTRACT

Gestalt therapy has always been a radically relational theory and practice. The divisive tendencies of the human race have never been so dangerous as in this age of global business, politics, and military action. The kind of contact that Gestalt therapy theory and practice methodology calls for follows the principles of dialogue. Dialogue means meeting the other with recognition, respect, and acceptance rather than aiming to control the other and direct change or reform. The practice and skill at setting aside biases, preconceptions, so a clearer understanding can emerge is at the heart of the phenomenological method. The profit motive and disregard for the needs of others that Cavaleri discussed are real and important. Gestalt therapy as a radically relational theory and practice can contribute in an age that has a desperate need for a radically relational attitude by government leaders and ordinary citizens.
